Kamandalu Ubud, Bali

Kamandalu Hotels & Resorts
Edition
February - March 2017

Dear Friends,
Greetings from Kamandalu Ubud!

With the New Year celebrations behind us, it is now time for a fresh start as we begin another cycle of ceremonial rituals that make Bali so unique. There are plenty of things coming up on the island’s cultural calendar, including Nyepi or Silent Day, which will see all activity on the island come to a complete standstill for a period of 24-hours. The act of keeping the whole island of Bali quiet for an entire day and night is truly amazing. The whole experienceof temporarily shutting down and pausing all activities to rejuvenate is very rewarding.

The seasonal rains are now upon us and Bali is looking particularly lush and green. Our own rice terraces are thriving and we look forward to another successful harvest in the months to come. As the village of Ubud continues top the polls as one of Asia’s best cultural destinations, we hope to welcome more discerning travellers during 2017. We are eager to share our resort and showcase what we believe is the perfect blend of art, nature, tradition and gracious Balinese hospitality. Blissfuly Yours,
Kamandalu Ubud

Ogoh Ogoh festival - Kamandalu Ubud, Bali   Nyepi Day
Tuesday, 28 March 2017

Nyepi Day is the New Year in accordance to the Balinese calendar. It is also known as Silent Day as all activity on the island comes to a complete standstill for a 24-hour period. If you happen to be staying with us at Kamandalu Ubud during this cultural holiday, you will certainly find the quietness a refreshing change from the busy pace of today’s modern world. With literally everything coming to a temporary halt, Nyepi is the perfect opportunity to reflect on life itself.
On the eve of Nyepi, a unique event in the form of a Fire War will be taking place in the neighbouring village of Nagi. Young men from within the community will stage a mock battle and throw flaming balls of dried coconut husks at each other. This symbolizing driving away any demons that may try to disturb the peace on Bali. They will continue with a noisy parade of monster effigies known as ogoh-ogoh, which represents the manifestation of all evil forces from the underworld. The parade is actually an exorcism ceremony that seeks to restore harmony on the island in preparation for the New Year ahead.
